The Demand for Anime : How Big Is It?

When discussing animation in general, the phrase "anime" is used in Japan. In contrast, it is now a term we use to refer to Japanese animated films and television shows across the rest of the world. A new wave of anime with a blend of cultures and representation has created many fans all over the world. Anime has a variety of genres. Because of its wide genre coverage, anime can be enjoyed by all age groups and gender.

Japanese animation, or Anime, was first introduced in 1960. However, there is debate as to whether or not Anime should be considered a cartoon. Yet, there is disagreement over whether anime should be categorized as a cartoon. Nonetheless, Japan does not want Anime to be considered as a form of cartoon.

Then, is Anime actually still in its huge demand?

Based on Parrot Analytics Global audiences’ share of demand ; Anime was the third most in-demand subgenre behind only the hugely popular sitcom and crime drama subgenres. The popularity of anime varies from place to place within the region. European markets have witnessed the biggest growth in their demand for anime programs over the past year out of the top ten most anime-loving markets. The demand for anime programs increased by almost 100% (+107%) in Germany, which was the country with the largest increase. While in France and Russia, demand came close but did not quite double over the same time. The top four are completed by the UK. In this sector, the demand for anime programs increased by 59% since September 2020.

In Southeast Asia, anime is the second most in-demand genre. It comes in behind only the Superhero category, and just ahead of Science-Fiction. In the previous 90 days, anime has had a 0.40x increase in demand above the market's average title. But, because Asia is such a large continent, it is insufficient to view it as a single entity.

Undeniably, anime is a genre that overcomes all barriers. Cultural and geographical proximity to Japan are relevant factors in the demand for it but, in the end, Anime is ultimately a bigger phenomenon. It will continue to conquer the world in the same way as it conquered the various regions of Asia.
